With reference to the National Movement in its final phase, answer the following questions:
Give any three effects of the Quit India Movement launched by Gandhi in 1942.
Topic: Effects of the Quit India Movement
Answer
(1) It was the LARGEST MASS UPRISING since 1857. Although the entire leadership was arrested within hours, ordinary people carried it on — students, peasants and workers attacked government buildings, railways and telegraph lines, and PARALLEL GOVERNMENTS were set up at Satara, Ballia and Tamluk. (2) It proved the DEPTH OF THE DEMAND for independence. The British could suppress it only by force, imprisoning over 60,000 people, which destroyed their claim that the Congress spoke for a minority and convinced them they could no longer govern India against its people’s will. (3) It brought WOMEN AND YOUTH into the struggle in large numbers — Aruna Asaf Ali hoisting the flag at Gowalia Tank, Usha Mehta running the underground Congress Radio — and it prepared the ground for the final negotiations that ended in independence five years later.
One mark per effect. The question asks for EFFECTS, so give consequences rather than a narrative of the movement. The strongest single point is that leaderless people carried it on after every leader was jailed — that is what proved the demand was truly national. The parallel governments at Satara, Ballia and Tamluk are the concrete evidence and are worth naming. Aruna Asaf Ali and Usha Mehta make the third point vivid.
