Mention any two causes of the Quit India Movement.

(1) The failure of the Cripps Mission in 1942, which offered only Dominion Status after the war and allowed provinces to stay out of the Union — terms the Congress rejected as "a post-dated cheque on a crashing bank". (2) The fear of a Japanese invasion after the fall of Singapore, Malaya and Burma, together with popular anger over wartime shortages, soaring prices and the failure of the government to protect the people.

One mark each. The failure of the Cripps Mission is the immediate cause and must be given first. The "post-dated cheque" phrase is worth quoting; examiners recognise it at once. Note the date carefully: Cripps came in March 1942 and the Quit India Resolution was passed at Bombay on 8 August 1942, with the call "Do or Die". Confusing these causes with those of Civil Disobedience (1930) is the commonest error.
