State any three reasons for launching of Quit India Movement.

(1) The FAILURE OF THE CRIPPS MISSION in March 1942, which offered only Dominion Status after the war and allowed provinces to stay out of the Union — terms the Congress rejected as "a post-dated cheque on a crashing bank". (2) The FEAR OF A JAPANESE INVASION after the fall of Singapore, Malaya and Burma. The British had failed to defend their own territories, and Indians felt that only a free India could defend herself. (3) POPULAR DISCONTENT over wartime hardship — shortages of food, soaring prices, forced recruitment and the government’s failure to protect the people; and anger that India had been dragged into the war without the consent of her leaders.

One mark per reason. The failure of the Cripps Mission is the immediate cause and must come first. The "post-dated cheque" phrase is worth quoting; examiners recognise it at once. Fix the dates so as not to confuse this movement with Civil Disobedience: Cripps came in March 1942 and the Quit India Resolution was passed at Bombay on 8 August 1942, with Gandhiji’s call "Do or Die".
