With reference to the Mass Phase of the National Movement, answer the following:
Explain any four significant effects of Quit India Movement.
Topic: Effects of the Quit India Movement
Answer
(1) It was the LARGEST MASS UPRISING since 1857. Despite the arrest of the entire leadership within hours, ordinary people carried it on — students, peasants and workers attacked government buildings, railways and telegraph lines, and parallel governments were set up at Satara, Ballia and Tamluk. (2) It showed the DEPTH AND DETERMINATION of the demand for independence: the British could suppress the movement only by force, imprisoning over 60,000 people, which destroyed the claim that the Congress spoke for a minority. (3) It UNDERMINED BRITISH AUTHORITY in India and convinced them that they could no longer govern the country against the will of its people — after the war the Labour Government moved quickly towards a transfer of power. (4) It brought WOMEN AND YOUTH into the struggle in large numbers — Aruna Asaf Ali hoisting the flag at Gowalia Tank, Usha Mehta running the underground Congress Radio — and it prepared the ground for the final phase of the freedom movement, which ended in independence five years later.
Four marks, four effects. The word "significant" means the examiner wants CONSEQUENCES, not a narrative of the movement. The strongest single point is that leaderless people carried it on after every leader was jailed — that is what proved the demand was national. The parallel governments at Satara, Ballia and Tamluk are the concrete evidence and are worth naming. Aruna Asaf Ali and Usha Mehta are the names that make the fourth point vivid.
