With reference to the Mass Phase of the National Movement, answer the following:
Give the name given to the uprising of 1942. State two reasons for launching this mass uprising.
Topic: The Quit India Movement
Answer
The uprising of 1942 was the QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT (also called the August Revolution). The resolution was passed at Bombay on 8 August 1942, with Gandhiji’s call to "DO OR DIE".
Two reasons: (1) The FAILURE OF THE CRIPPS MISSION in March 1942, which offered only Dominion Status after the war and allowed provinces to stay out of the Union — rejected by the Congress as "a post-dated cheque on a crashing bank". (2) The FEAR OF A JAPANESE INVASION after the fall of Singapore, Malaya and Burma. The British had failed to defend their own territories, and Indians felt that only a free India could defend herself; wartime shortages and soaring prices added to the anger.
Three marks: one for the name and one for each reason. The two quotable phrases — "Do or Die" and "post-dated cheque" — should both appear; examiners recognise them at once. Keep these causes clear of the 1930 movement’s: Civil Disobedience follows the Simon Commission and Purna Swaraj, Quit India follows Cripps and the Japanese threat.
