UNICEF stands for the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (now officially the United Nations Children’s Fund, though the original abbreviation is retained).
Three functions: (1) It provides food, clothing, medicines and shelter to children in countries affected by war, famine and natural disasters. (2) It runs immunisation and health programmes for children and expectant mothers, and works to control diseases such as polio and tuberculosis and to provide safe drinking water and nutrition. (3) It promotes primary education for children, works against child labour and child abuse, and defends the rights of the child.
Four marks: one for the full form and one for each function. Write the full form out completely — the words "International" and "Emergency" are in the original name and are exactly what the mark is for. It was set up in 1946 and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1965. For the functions, cover three different areas — relief, health, and education/rights — rather than three kinds of relief work.
