WHO stands for the WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION, established in 1948 with headquarters at Geneva.
Two functions: (1) It works to control and eradicate epidemic and communicable diseases — malaria, tuberculosis, AIDS and polio among them — through vaccination campaigns and research; its greatest success was the complete eradication of smallpox in 1980. (2) It sets international standards for drugs and vaccines, maintains a worldwide warning system about outbreaks of disease, promotes maternal and child health, nutrition and safe drinking water, and provides emergency medical aid during epidemics and disasters.
Three marks: one for the full form and one for each function. Cover two DIFFERENT areas — disease control and standards or health promotion — rather than naming two diseases. The eradication of smallpox in 1980 is the single most quotable achievement and should appear. World Health Day is observed on 7 April.
