UNESCO stands for the UNITED NATIONS EDUCATIONAL, SCIENTIFIC AND CULTURAL ORGANISATION, established in 1946 with its headquarters at Paris.

Three functions: (1) EDUCATION — it promotes free and universal primary education, works to remove illiteracy and to spread adult and technical education, and helps member states train teachers and improve their educational systems. (2) SCIENCE — it encourages scientific research and the exchange of scientific knowledge between countries, and promotes co-operation on the environment, oceanography and natural resources. (3) CULTURE — it identifies and protects WORLD HERITAGE SITES, preserves monuments, museums, libraries and works of art, promotes the free flow of ideas and press freedom, and works against the illegal trade in cultural property.

Four marks: one for the full form and one for each function. Write the full form out completely — all four words earn the mark, and candidates often drop "Scientific". The neatest structure is to take the three fields FROM THE NAME itself: educational, scientific, cultural. That guarantees three distinct functions and is impossible to forget. The World Heritage programme is the single most quotable example and should appear under culture.
