The march is the DANDI MARCH, also called the Salt March or Salt Satyagraha. Gandhiji set out from the Sabarmati Ashram on 12 March 1930 with 78 followers and walked about 385 km to the coastal village of Dandi, where on 6 April 1930 he broke the salt law by picking up a handful of natural salt.
It led to the beginning of the CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE MOVEMENT, which spread across the country as people everywhere made salt illegally, boycotted foreign cloth and liquor shops, and refused to pay taxes.
