The incident is the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, at Amritsar on 13 April 1919, when General Dyer ordered his troops to fire without warning on an unarmed crowd gathered in an enclosed garden.
It led to the Non-Cooperation Movement, launched by Gandhiji in 1920.
The movement was suspended after the Chauri Chaura incident of 5 February 1922, when an angry mob at Chauri Chaura in Gorakhpur district set fire to a police station, killing 22 policemen. Gandhiji, holding that the people were not yet ready for non-violent struggle, called the movement off.
