Explanation

The Simon Commission, appointed in 1927 to review the working of the Government of India Act of 1919, consisted of seven British members and not one Indian. Indians saw this as an insult — a body of foreigners deciding India’s constitutional future — and met it everywhere with black flags and the cry "Simon Go Back". The protest turned tragic at Lahore, where Lala Lajpat Rai was injured in a lathi charge and died soon after, an event that pushed the movement towards Purna Swaraj.
