State any three features of the Programme of the Civil Disobedience Movement launched in 1930.

(1) DEFIANCE OF THE SALT LAW — the movement opened with the Dandi March, and people all along the coast made salt illegally in open breach of the government monopoly. (2) BOYCOTT AND PICKETING — of foreign cloth, liquor shops and opium dens, and of British goods, schools, colleges and law courts; foreign cloth was publicly burnt and Swadeshi promoted in its place. (3) REFUSAL TO PAY TAXES and revenue, the resignation of government servants from their posts, the surrender of titles and honours, and the breaking of other repressive laws — while remaining strictly non-violent and courting arrest.

One mark per feature. Note the difference from Non-Cooperation: that movement was about REFUSING to co-operate, this one about actively BREAKING unjust laws — which is why it is called civil DISOBEDIENCE. The salt law must appear first, since it defined the movement. The role of women is worth a phrase: Sarojini Naidu led the raid on the Dharasana salt works, and thousands of women picketed liquor and cloth shops for the first time.
