(1) It identifies and designates places of outstanding universal value as WORLD HERITAGE SITES, and provides technical and financial help for their protection, restoration and maintenance — as with the temples of Abu Simbel in Egypt and the monuments at Borobudur. (2) It helps preserve MONUMENTS, MUSEUMS, LIBRARIES, ARCHIVES AND WORKS OF ART, and encourages the study and appreciation of the different cultures of the world, so that each people takes pride in its own heritage and respects that of others. (3) It works against the ILLEGAL EXPORT AND TRADE in cultural property, helps recover objects taken unlawfully from a country, and promotes the preservation of languages, folklore, music and traditional crafts — the intangible heritage of mankind.
