UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund): (1) It provides food, clothing, medicines and shelter to CHILDREN in countries affected by war, famine and natural disasters. (2) It runs immunisation and health programmes for children and expectant mothers, promotes primary education, and works against child labour and child abuse in defence of the rights of the child.
WHO (World Health Organisation): (1) It works to CONTROL AND ERADICATE epidemic and communicable diseases — malaria, tuberculosis, AIDS and polio — through vaccination campaigns and research; it eradicated smallpox completely in 1980. (2) It sets international standards for drugs and vaccines, maintains a worldwide warning system about outbreaks of disease, promotes maternal and child health, nutrition and safe drinking water, and gives emergency medical aid.
Four marks split evenly — two functions for each agency, one mark each. Use separate headings so both halves are visible. The two agencies overlap on child health, so choose carefully: give UNICEF its relief and education work, and WHO its disease control and standard-setting. Repeating the same function under both earns one mark, not two. The eradication of smallpox in 1980 is the single most quotable achievement in this topic.
