The Lahore session of December 1929, presided over by JAWAHARLAL NEHRU, declared PURNA SWARAJ — complete independence — as the goal of the Congress, abandoning the earlier demand for Dominion Status.

The tricolour was hoisted on the banks of the Ravi, and 26 JANUARY 1930 was fixed as INDEPENDENCE DAY, to be observed throughout the country with a pledge of freedom. Having set complete freedom as the goal, the Congress needed a mass programme to achieve it — and the Civil Disobedience Movement followed in 1930.

Explanation

Two marks: the declaration of Purna Swaraj, and its consequence. The date 26 January 1930 is worth giving, since it is why we keep Republic Day on that date — the Constitution was brought into force on 26 January 1950 in memory of this pledge. The link to Civil Disobedience is the second mark: Lahore set the GOAL, and the movement was the means.
