Explain any three functions of the WHO.

(1) It works to CONTROL AND ERADICATE epidemic and communicable diseases — malaria, tuberculosis, AIDS and polio among them — through vaccination campaigns, research and international co-operation; its greatest achievement was the complete eradication of SMALLPOX in 1980. (2) It SETS INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS for drugs, vaccines and food, maintains a worldwide system of information and early warning about outbreaks of disease, and helps governments strengthen their health services and train doctors and health workers. (3) It PROMOTES maternal and child health, nutrition, sanitation and safe drinking water, campaigns against smoking and drug abuse, and provides emergency medical aid during epidemics and natural disasters.

One mark per function. Cover three different AREAS — disease control, standards and information, and health promotion — rather than three diseases. The eradication of smallpox in 1980 is the single most quotable achievement and should appear.
