Given below is an outline of the human body showing the important endocrine glands. Match the glands marked (a) to (e) with their correct functions. (Example: (f) – 6. Secretes Testosterone.)

Match the glands marked (a) to (e) in the diagram with their functions: 1. Prepares the body to face stress. 2. Secretes tropic hormones 3. Secretes Oestrogens 4. Maintains blood sugar level 5. Regulates basal metabolism 6. Secretes Testosterone.
Topic: Endocrine glands and their functions
Answer
(a) Pituitary gland – 2. Secretes tropic hormones (b) Thyroid gland – 5. Regulates basal metabolism (c) Adrenal gland – 1. Prepares the body to face stress (d) Pancreas – 4. Maintains blood sugar level (e) Ovary – 3. Secretes Oestrogens
The glands are labelled down the body, so identify each by its POSITION in the outline and then match the function.
PITUITARY — at the base of the brain. Called the MASTER GLAND because its TROPIC hormones control other endocrine glands (TSH controls the thyroid, ACTH the adrenal cortex, FSH and LH the gonads). "Tropic" means directed at another gland. THYROID — in the neck. Its thyroxine sets the BASAL METABOLIC RATE. ADRENAL — on top of each kidney. Its adrenaline is the EMERGENCY hormone, preparing the body to fight or flee. PANCREAS — below the stomach. Insulin and glucagon keep BLOOD SUGAR steady. OVARY — in the female pelvis. Secretes OESTROGEN. (The worked example gives the testis for testosterone, which tells you the ovary must take the oestrogen option.)
THE STRATEGY: the example is given for a reason — it removes one function from the list. Strike out testosterone at once, and five functions remain for five glands. Do the ones you are certain of first and let elimination settle the rest.
