Explanation
Thyroxine is an iodine-containing hormone, so the thyroid gland cannot make it without a dietary supply of iodine.
WHAT HAPPENS WITHOUT IT: the thyroid enlarges as it works harder to trap what little iodine there is, producing the swelling in the neck called SIMPLE GOITRE. This is why table salt is iodised — a cheap public-health measure that has largely eliminated the disease in India.
Deficiency in CHILDREN causes CRETINISM (stunted growth and mental retardation); in ADULTS it causes MYXOEDEMA. The same deficiency, two names, depending on age — a favourite examination point.
