The ISLETS OF LANGERHANS are groups of hormone-secreting cells scattered throughout the PANCREAS. Within them, BETA cells secrete INSULIN (which lowers blood glucose) and ALPHA cells secrete GLUCAGON (which raises it).
The word ISLETS means "little islands", describing exactly how they lie — isolated patches embedded among the far more numerous cells that make digestive enzymes.
That arrangement makes the pancreas a HETEROCRINE or MIXED gland: its exocrine part pours pancreatic juice into the duodenum through a DUCT, while the islets release hormones DIRECTLY INTO THE BLOOD with no duct at all. It is the standard answer when a question asks for such a gland.
