THYROID STIMULATING HORMONE.
Explanation
TSH is secreted by the ANTERIOR lobe of the pituitary and stimulates the THYROID gland to produce thyroxine.
It is a TROPIC hormone — one whose target is another endocrine gland rather than a body tissue. That is why the pituitary is called the MASTER GLAND.
The tropic hormones as a family, all from the anterior pituitary: TSH (thyroid), ACTH (adrenal cortex), FSH and LH (gonads).
TSH also explains SIMPLE GOITRE: when iodine is lacking, thyroxine falls, the pituitary pours out more TSH, and the thyroid ENLARGES while still producing too little.
