CRETINISM results from a deficiency of thyroxine IN CHILDREN. It produces stunted physical growth (dwarfism), mental retardation, a thick protruding tongue and delayed sexual development.
THE AGE IS THE WHOLE POINT, and examiners test it repeatedly: the SAME deficiency produces DIFFERENT disorders at different ages. in CHILDREN — CRETINISM in ADULTS — MYXOEDEMA (puffy skin, weight gain, sluggishness, but no effect on growth, since growth is already complete)
