Identify it from the diagram by its POSITION and SHAPE: it lies in the NECK, on either side of and in front of the TRACHEA, just below the larynx, and is BILOBED — two lobes joined by a narrow bridge (the isthmus) across the front of the windpipe, giving it a butterfly shape.
No other endocrine gland has that outline or that position.
Its position explains a symptom: when the gland enlarges in GOITRE the swelling is plainly visible at the front of the neck and may press on the trachea.
