The nationalist was BAL GANGADHAR TILAK, known as LOKMANYA — "revered by the people".

One contribution: he awakened national feeling through his newspapers KESARI (in Marathi) and MARATHA (in English), for which he was imprisoned and deported to Mandalay, where he wrote the Gita Rahasya. (Equally acceptable: he used the Ganapati and Shivaji festivals to carry the national message to ordinary people; or he founded the Home Rule League in 1916.)

Explanation

One mark for the name and one for the contribution. His title, Lokmanya, is worth adding. Only ONE contribution is asked, so develop one rather than listing three. The festivals point is the most interesting historically, because it shows how he turned religious occasions into political ones and so reached people the Moderates never touched — the beginning of mass politics in India.
