The conflict between two sections of the Congress came to the surface in its Session in 1906 at Calcutta. In this context, explain the following:

With reference to the picture given below, answer the following: 1) What were the three personalities popularly known as? 2) Which section of the Congress did they represent? 3) Mention two of their popular beliefs.
Topic: Lal-Bal-Pal
Answer
- They were popularly known as LAL-BAL-PAL — Lala Lajpat Rai, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal.
- They represented the ASSERTIVE NATIONALISTS (also called the Extremists or Radicals) of the Congress.
- Two of their beliefs:
(i) That SWARAJ — complete independence — was the birthright of Indians and must be demanded, not requested. Tilak declared, "Swaraj is my birthright and I shall have it." (ii) That freedom must be won by the efforts of Indians themselves through SELF-RELIANCE AND SACRIFICE, not by appealing to British justice; they had no faith in the goodwill of the British and were ready to defy the law and suffer imprisonment.
Three tasks, one mark each. The name LAL-BAL-PAL must appear — it is what the question is asking for — and the three men should be named in full. For the beliefs, give ones that DISTINGUISH them from the Moderates: complete independence rather than reform, and self-reliance rather than petitions. Tilak’s slogan is the single most quotable line in this chapter and should be used.
