The leader is ADOLF HITLER, the Nazi dictator of Germany, who became Chancellor in 1933 and Führer in 1934.

Two examples of his expansionist policy: (1) He remilitarised the RHINELAND in 1936 and annexed AUSTRIA in March 1938 (the Anschluss), both in open defiance of the Treaty of Versailles. (2) He took the SUDETENLAND from Czechoslovakia by the Munich Pact of 1938 and occupied the rest of the country in March 1939; he then demanded Danzig and invaded POLAND on 1 September 1939, which began the Second World War.

Three marks: one for the leader and one for each example. Give the examples in CHRONOLOGICAL order with their dates — Rhineland 1936, Austria 1938, Sudetenland 1938, Czechoslovakia and Poland 1939. The sequence itself demonstrates the expansionist policy far better than any description. The word LEBENSRAUM (living space) is worth using: it was Hitler’s own justification for eastward expansion.
