MEDULLA OBLONGATA.
Explanation
Peristalsis is an INVOLUNTARY movement — you cannot choose to push food along your gut — and involuntary activities are controlled by the medulla oblongata.
The medulla also controls heartbeat, breathing, swallowing, coughing, sneezing, vomiting and the secretion of saliva. That is why it is called the vital centre: damage to it is fatal.
THE TEST that answers most brain questions: ask whether the action is VOLUNTARY or INVOLUNTARY. Voluntary — cerebrum. Balance and coordination of movement — cerebellum. Involuntary internal activity — medulla oblongata.
