MIXED NERVE.
Explanation
The three types of nerve, classified by what they carry: SENSORY (afferent) — carries impulses FROM receptors TO the central nervous system. Example: the optic nerve. MOTOR (efferent) — carries impulses FROM the CNS TO muscles and glands. MIXED — contains BOTH kinds of fibre, so it carries impulses in both directions. Example: all 31 pairs of SPINAL NERVES, and some cranial nerves such as the vagus.
Every spinal nerve is mixed because it is formed by the union of a DORSAL root (sensory) and a VENTRAL root (motor) just outside the spinal cord — which is a useful way to remember why.
