POPULATION DENSITY is the number of individuals (people) living per UNIT AREA — usually per square kilometre — at a given time.
Explanation
Both elements must appear: the number of PEOPLE and the UNIT AREA. An answer giving only "the number of people in a place" omits the area and earns half.
Keep it apart from the other population terms, which are all RATES rather than densities: NATALITY — births per 1,000 people per YEAR MORTALITY — deaths per 1,000 people per YEAR GROWTH RATE — natality minus mortality
The UNIT tells you which is meant: density is per AREA, the others are per THOUSAND PEOPLE PER YEAR.
