The corpus callosum is the broad band of nerve fibres lying BETWEEN THE TWO CEREBRAL HEMISPHERES, connecting them.
Explanation
The cerebrum is divided into a LEFT and a RIGHT hemisphere, and the corpus callosum is the bridge of white matter (axons) joining them.
ITS FUNCTION: it allows the two halves of the brain to communicate and to coordinate their activity, so that information reaching one side is available to the other.
Note that it is made of WHITE matter — axons, not cell bodies — which is consistent with its job of carrying signals from one place to another.
