GROWTH RATE OF POPULATION.
Explanation
Growth rate = NATALITY − MORTALITY (adjusted for migration).
THE CENTRAL POINT of this chapter: a population explosion results not from a rising birth rate but from a FALLING DEATH RATE. Births stayed high while deaths fell sharply with better medicine and sanitation, and the widening GAP between them is the growth.
That is why population programmes work on the BIRTH rate — nobody wishes to reverse the fall in deaths.
Note the units of the related terms: natality and mortality are per 1,000 people per YEAR, while population DENSITY is per square KILOMETRE.
