Name the parts numbered 1 and 2.
Topic: Daughter chromosomes and nuclear membrane
Answer
1 — DAUGHTER CHROMOSOME 2 — NUCLEAR MEMBRANE
The term DAUGHTER CHROMOSOME is worth being precise about. Before anaphase, each chromosome consists of two CHROMATIDS joined at a centromere. The instant the centromere splits, each chromatid becomes an independent chromosome in its own right — and from that moment it is called a DAUGHTER CHROMOSOME.
So the same physical structure has two names depending on WHEN you are looking: CHROMATID while still attached, DAUGHTER CHROMOSOME once separated.
The re-forming NUCLEAR MEMBRANE around each group is the surest sign of telophase, and it is what distinguishes this diagram from anaphase, where the chromosomes are still in transit.
