Topic: Autosomes and allosomes
Previous-year question practice database
Answer
Exam answer
Autosomes: 44 (22 pairs) Allosomes: 2 (1 pair)
Explanation
A human body cell has 46 chromosomes in all, made up of: 44 AUTOSOMES — 22 pairs that carry the genes for ordinary body characteristics. 2 ALLOSOMES — 1 pair of sex chromosomes, XX in a female and XY in a male.
THE TRAP is answering in pairs when the question asks for a NUMBER. It says "the number of", so write 44 and 2, not 22 pairs and 1 pair. Giving both (as the model does) is safest.
Remember that this applies to a BODY cell (diploid). A GAMETE has half of each — 22 autosomes and 1 allosome, making 23 in all.
