GYRI are the raised ridges and SULCI the grooves between them — the characteristic folding of the CEREBRUM.
WHY THE CEREBRUM IS FOLDED: its grey matter (the cytons) lies on the OUTSIDE, and folding greatly increases the surface area available for it within a skull of fixed size. More cell bodies means greater capacity for thought and memory — which is why the human cerebrum is far more convoluted than that of other animals.
The CEREBELLUM is also folded, but much more finely, and the terms gyri and sulci belong to the cerebrum.
