Explanation
Population density is the number of individuals living per UNIT AREA — usually per square kilometre — at a given time.
THE UNIT is what distinguishes it from every other population term, and reading the unit tells you which term is meant: POPULATION DENSITY — people per square KILOMETRE (per AREA) NATALITY — births per 1,000 people per YEAR MORTALITY — deaths per 1,000 people per YEAR GROWTH RATE — natality minus mortality
Only density is measured per area; the rest are rates per thousand people per year.
