(2) France was given the right to work the coal mines of the Saar valley for fifteen years as compensation for the destruction of her own mines, and the Rhineland was demilitarised, which removed the German threat from her frontier.
Alsace and Lorraine is the essential point and must come first — recovering them had been France’s aim since 1871. The Saar coal mines and the demilitarised Rhineland are the other two gains; either earns the second half.
