(1) He was twice elected President of the Indian National Congress, at Haripura in 1938 and Tripuri in 1939, and gave the national movement a radical and socialist direction; he founded the FORWARD BLOC in 1939. (2) He escaped from house arrest in Calcutta in 1941, reached Germany and then Japan, and REORGANISED THE INDIAN NATIONAL ARMY in 1943 as its Supreme Commander, raising it into a disciplined force that included the Rani Jhansi Regiment of women. (3) He proclaimed the PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT OF FREE INDIA (Azad Hind) at Singapore in October 1943, which was recognised by several countries and hoisted the Indian flag on liberated soil at Moirang in Manipur; he inspired the nation with the call "Give me blood and I shall give you freedom" and the slogan "Jai Hind".
