Context worth a clause: Naoroji’s DRAIN THEORY argued that Britain was systematically draining India’s wealth — through home charges, salaries and pensions paid to Englishmen, and profits remitted abroad — which was the root cause of Indian poverty. It gave the national movement its first economic argument against British rule. He is known as the "Grand Old Man of India".
