The PERFECT PARTICIPLE ("Having + past participle") is used for the action that happened FIRST. The original says he finished the exercise AND THEN put the books away, so finishing comes first: "Having finished his exercise, he put his books away."
Option (b) is the trap and reverses the order of events — it says he put the books away before finishing the exercise, which is both illogical and a change of meaning.
Option (d) changes "Having" into "Having to", which means he was OBLIGED to finish — an entirely different sense.
THE RULE: in any "Begin: Having..." transformation, ask which action happened first, and put THAT one after "Having".
