The two sentences are combined with a PARTICIPIAL PHRASE: "Picking up the bundle, he walked away." The present participle turns the first action into a phrase attached to the second.
Why the others fail: (a) uses "and", which the instruction expressly forbids — read the instruction before the options. (b) says PACKING, a different word from picking. Watch for options that change a single word. (d) reverses the logic: he did not walk away BY picking up the bundle; he picked it up and then walked.
Note that "Having picked up the bundle, he walked away" would also be correct and is the form used when one action clearly finishes before the other begins.
