The two constructions take DIFFERENT connecting words, and that is the entire question: prefer A TO B would rather A THAN B
Option (a) keeps "to" from the original — the commonest error, and exactly what the question is set to catch. Option (c) uses "prefer" AND "rather" together, which is redundant; the instruction is to REPLACE the construction, not to add to it. Option (d) drops the word "simple", changing the original.
Note also that "would rather" is followed by the BARE INFINITIVE — would rather HAVE, never "would rather to have".
The same transformation appeared in the 2025 paper. It is worth learning in both directions, since either may be asked.
