The two constructions take different connecting words and different verb forms: would rather + BARE INFINITIVE + THAN (would rather read... than watch) prefer + GERUND + TO (prefer reading... to watching) Both parts change, which is what makes this harder than it looks.
Option (a) uses "rather" and "prefer" together, which is redundant, and reverses the preference. Option (c) reverses the preference and uses "watched", a past tense where a gerund is needed. Option (d) is INCONSISTENT — "the book" (noun) against "watching a movie" (gerund). The two things compared must be in the same grammatical form: either "the book to the movie" or "reading to watching".
This transformation appears in the 2024 and 2025 papers as well, in the opposite direction. Learn it both ways.
