The instruction replaces the VERB "explain" with the NOUN "explanation", and that change forces the rest of the sentence to reorganise: verb form: asked him TO EXPLAIN the buttons noun form: asked him FOR AN EXPLANATION OF the buttons
Two prepositions appear where there were none. One ASKS FOR an explanation, and an explanation is OF something. Getting either wrong loses the mark.
Note that the sentence has also been turned from passive into active, which is natural once the noun is used, and the instruction permits "other changes that may be necessary".
This is the same kind of transformation as the 2026 paper’s "difference" to "different" — when a question asks you to swap a word class, expect the surrounding structure to change with it.
