The two constructions take different connectives AND different verb forms, and both must change: prefer + GERUND + TO (prefer GOING... to STAYING) would rather + BARE INFINITIVE + THAN (would rather GO... than STAY)
Two errors are common: keeping the gerund — "would rather going... than staying" (wrong form) keeping "to" — "would rather go out with friends TO stay at home" (wrong connective)
Note that "would rather" takes the BARE infinitive — no "to". Never "would rather to go".
The two verbs after the construction must MATCH: go and stay, both bare infinitives. Writing "would rather go... than staying" is a parallelism error.
