- It acts as a SHOCK ABSORBER, cushioning the foetus against jerks, jolts and blows from outside.
- It maintains a CONSTANT TEMPERATURE around the foetus and keeps it moist, preventing the delicate tissues from drying out and from sticking to the amnion.

The amniotic fluid fills the amniotic sac in which the foetus floats. Its protective role is the obvious one; the temperature and moisture role is the one candidates forget, and it is worth giving as the second.
A third function, if a question asks for three: it allows the foetus to MOVE FREELY, which is necessary for the proper development of its muscles and bones.
Its bursting — "the breaking of the waters" — is one of the signs that labour has begun.
