STAPES (the stirrup).
Explanation
The three ear ossicles of the middle ear, in order from the eardrum inwards: MALLEUS (hammer) — attached to the tympanic membrane INCUS (anvil) — in the middle STAPES (stirrup) — fits into the OVAL WINDOW of the cochlea
Their job is to AMPLIFY the vibrations received from the eardrum and pass them to the fluid-filled inner ear. Amplification is necessary because it is much harder to set a liquid vibrating than air.
The STAPES is also the smallest bone in the human body — a fact examiners like. Its name means stirrup, and the order malleus → incus → stapes is worth learning as a sequence, since questions ask for the first, the last or the middle one.
