Explanation
The Graafian follicle is the mature, fluid-filled sac in the ovary that holds a ripened ovum. At ovulation it bursts and releases the ovum into the fallopian tube.
What happens next is worth knowing, since it is often the follow-up question: the empty follicle then becomes the CORPUS LUTEUM (yellow body), which secretes PROGESTERONE to maintain the uterine lining. If fertilisation does not occur the corpus luteum degenerates, progesterone falls, and menstruation follows.
