CORPUS LUTEUM (the yellow body).
Explanation
After the ovum is released, the ruptured Graafian follicle fills with cells and becomes the CORPUS LUTEUM, a temporary endocrine structure.
Its job is to secrete PROGESTERONE, which maintains the thickened uterine lining ready for implantation.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT decides the cycle: if the ovum IS fertilised, the corpus luteum persists for several months, keeping progesterone high so the pregnancy continues if it is NOT fertilised, the corpus luteum degenerates, progesterone falls, the lining can no longer be maintained, and menstruation follows
The name means "yellow body", from its colour.
