The bicuspid (mitral) valve lies BETWEEN THE LEFT ATRIUM AND THE LEFT VENTRICLE of the heart.

Explanation

BI- means two, so the bicuspid valve has TWO flaps or cusps. The valve on the right side, with THREE flaps, is the TRICUSPID valve — between the right atrium and right ventricle.

A way to fix which is which: the LEFT side has the valve with the smaller number — bi on the left, tri on the right.

THEIR PURPOSE: to prevent the BACKFLOW of blood from the ventricles into the atria when the ventricles contract. The flaps are held in position by the CHORDAE TENDINAE attached to the papillary muscles, so that the pressure of systole cannot turn them inside out.

Their closure produces the first heart sound, "lubb".
