IMPLANTATION.
Explanation
After fertilisation in the fallopian tube, the zygote divides as it travels down to the uterus, becoming first a MORULA and then a BLASTOCYST. About six or seven days after fertilisation the blastocyst embeds itself in the thickened uterine lining (endometrium) — that embedding is IMPLANTATION.
It marks the true beginning of pregnancy, and it is why the endometrium is built up each month under oestrogen and progesterone: to be ready to receive it. If implantation does not occur, the lining is shed as menstruation.
The placenta develops at the point of implantation, forming the link between mother and foetus.
