- VASECTOMY — in males, the VAS DEFERENS (sperm duct) is cut and tied, so sperms cannot pass into the semen.
- TUBECTOMY — in females, the FALLOPIAN TUBES are cut and tied, so the ovum cannot travel down and sperms cannot reach it.

Each name contains its structure: VAS-ectomy cuts the VAS deferens, TUBE-ctomy cuts the fallopian TUBES. Read the word and you cannot mix them up.
WHAT THESE OPERATIONS DO NOT DO, which examiners ask as a follow-up: a vasectomy does not stop the production of testosterone, and a tubectomy does not stop ovulation, menstruation or hormone secretion. Only the passage of the gametes is blocked.
Both are SURGICAL and regarded as PERMANENT, which distinguishes them from temporary methods — the condom, diaphragm, copper T and oral pills.
